Maualuga, who was selected by the Bengals in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft, played in 114 games with 104 starts over eight seasons. He was a starter on playoff teams in six of his Bengals campaigns.
The release comes one week after the Bengals signed former Cardinals linebacker Kevin Minter to a one-year deal. Minter finished 2016 with 81 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 16 games.
The Cincinnati Enquirer recently reported that the Bengals placed a first-round price tag on McCarron last season. After Tobin took the podium at the NFL Scouting Combine and repeatedly emphasized McCarron’s value, it certainly doesn’t appear the team is willing to lower that asking price.
“He plays a very valuable position: backup quarterback,” Tobin explained. “And you’re always one play away from going to your backup quarterback. We view our team as a team that can challenge. Whether that’s universal or not, we view our team as a team that is in the mix to challenge.
In 14 seasons at the helm, Lewis has guided the Bengals to an 117-103-3 record. This season will mark just the fourth time his team has finished worse than 8-8.
While fans have become disenchanted with the lack of playoff success (0-7), there is no arguing that Lewis has been a net positive for a Cincinnati franchise that was lost at sea before he entered the picture.
The receiver signed a four-year, $17.1 million contract with a $10.6 million signing bonus, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. The Bengals also agreed to pay Ross his full 2017 base salary if he’s on the non-football injury list, Rapoport added.
Ross, the former University of Washington wide receiver, clocked a 4.22-second 40-yard dash at the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine, breaking the record previously set by Chris Johnson in 2008 (4.24).
The numbers don’t exactly show it — Newton managed to throw for 237 yards in a Week 17 loss, a week after going 18 for 43 in a loss to Atlanta — but the quarterback was less than his best self down the stretch last season, as Carolina limped to just two wins in its final six games. Injuries and cheap jerseys and inconsistent play, especially along the offensive line, doomed Carolina, and it made sense when it was revealed after the season that Newton had been playing through his own ailment.
There’s little to no reason for Newton to take a single snap of game action prior to Week 1 of the regular season, which everyone involved knows. But monitoring his ability to throw in practice is important, because it serves as our sole barometer of where his shoulder is. With proper treatment and monitoring off the field, Newton should be fine come kickoff weekend.
All three of his catches Sunday, including two touchdowns, were contested. Golladay is a great example of a rookie who built buzz in OTAs, training camp and has now backed it up in the preseason. The third-rounder is playing with a quarterback in Matthew Stafford who is unafraid to give his receivers 50-50 balls. Golladay is showing he can tilt those odds.
Diehards watching deep into the third quarter of the 49ers’ preseason opener in Kansas City were treated to Thomas sprinting from the right hashmark to the left sideline so he could hammer a Chiefs ball carrier and force a punt. The No. 3 overall pick, who lined up at defensive tackle and defensive end, also ended a drive with a pressure that led to an interception.
