Tulloch was a tackling machine during his stint in Detroit. He amassed more than 100 tackles in four of his five seasons. He might be best remembered by the national audience for tearing his ACL in 2014 while celebrating a sack of Aaron Rodgers.
The ten-season veteran led the Lions in tackles in 2015 with 107 in 16 starts. However, his lateral mobility was clearly diminishing. A liability in coverage at this stage of his career, Tulloch could latch on with a club as a two-down, run-stuffing inside linebacker.
The Lions lost starting running back Ameer Abdullah to injured reserve with a foot injury. Rookie Dwayne Washington is battling ankle troubles. Theo Riddick is a pass-catching back, not a between-the-tackles player. Zach Zenner has proven ineffective outside of preseason action.
The Lions rank 23rd in rushing, with a meager 89.8 yards per game on the ground for the season. In the past three games without Abdullah, Detroit averaged a pathetic 65.3 YPG rushing — quarterback Matthew Stafford was the team’s second-leading rusher in each of those contests.
“We are aware of the upcoming NFL suspension of Andrew Quarless,” Lions general manager Bob Quinn said in a statement. “We have thoroughly researched the incident that caused the suspension and have talked at length with Andrew about this. Andrew has been forthright and cheap jerseys china and honest about the situation and he has gone through the process within the legal system. As an organization we are comfortable with adding Andrew to the roster and look forward to seeing him compete for the rest of the preseason.”
The news is likely an indication of some looming roster updates in Detroit. Veteran Brandon Pettigrew started the season on the PUP list after a December ACL tear, and Eric Ebron was carted off the practice field a week ago with what appeared to be a serious Achilles injury. Though Ebron was moving well after the incident, he did not play in Detroit’s preseason opener.
New general manager Bob Quinn, who came from New England, tried to give a shot to a veteran who produced during his years with the Pats. It didn’t work out. Quinn demonstrated already he’ll make quick, Belichickian-like decisions, willing to admit a mistake and move on from a player.
Cutting Ridley now allows Zenner (likely in the lead for the backup big-back role), Washington and Winn to battle for what could be two roster spots in the final weeks of the preseason.

In the days leading up to this year’s draft, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the annual event would very likely leave Chicago after two years in the Windy City. New York was the home of the draft for 50 years prior to that.
Though Wood didn’t suggest what year might be ideal for Detroit, other cities hoping to host a draft have targeted dates. Dallas Cowboys officials have had discussions with the league about hosting the draft in 2018, while the Green Bay Packers have expressed interest in the 2019, 2020 or 2021 drafts.
The remarkably consistent veteran will enter his 14th NFL season having played a majority of his games in each campaign. In all but one season — 2007 with the Arizona Cardinals — Boldin was targeted over 100 times. Entering the downside of his 30s, Boldin caught 237 passes for 3,030 yards and 16 touchdowns over his age 33, 34 and 35 seasons.
The signing gives another nod to the Lions’ plan post-Megatron: Replace production with possession. While the Lions might never be able to adequately recover from the loss of a 6-foot-6 behemoth and once-in-a-generation matchup nightmare, they have lined up a solid three-tiered receiving corps that should keep momentum moving in the right direction. Per Rapoport, the Philadelphia Eagles and New Orleans Saints also showed interest.
