Any great quarterback — any great player, for that matter — will say success begins in the classroom. Since coming off the board as a second-round pick in 2014, Jimmy has been learning behind one of the best to ever play this game — an ideal situation for any young quarterback. He’s had two full seasons to learn the playbook, so he should be well-prepared heading into this season. From experience, I know Tom puts pressure on everyone around him to be better in every aspect of the game. When I played with Tom, he never took a day off and was always doing more strength and conditioning exercises than required. When it came to the film room, Tom was (and still is) always trying to understand the opposing defense better than the guys who play in it.
Jimmy has watched Tom work and learned what it takes to become a great quarterback. Now that this young player is running the offense through early October, he must take the necessary time to thoroughly prepare and digest the game plan. If he doesn’t, it will show on game day.
With All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski out of the mix, it’s not a huge surprise to see New England tinkering with the offense. Receivers Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan and Malcolm Mitchell can all play outside, but Floyd gives the Patriots another proven target.
Floyd has struggled on and off the field this season, but we wouldn’t put it past the Patriots to turn him into a productive player again in Foxborough.
Patriots running back Blount had a typically up-and-down evening in the desert, giving New England the lead with authority on one drive with and surrendering points to Arizona on the next. Blount started his third quarter by carrying six Cardinal defenders into the end zone to give the Pats a 10-point lead. However, on the next drive, Blount gave it right back when Frostee Rucker forced the back to fumble on New England’s own 33-yard line; Arizona cashed in just five plays later. It appears both sides suffered from… Blount Force Trauma.
Chandler Jones left the Patriots via trade in the offseason, but found himself in their backfield an awful lot in his first game as a Cardinal. The former New England pass rusher sacked Garoppolo once on the evening and finished with five total tackles. Guard Jonathan Cooper, the piece New England received in return for Jones, did not play with a foot injury.
But the luxury the Patriots had enjoyed for the first six quarters of the season is over. There was no forgetting Brady’s absence in New England, of course. But Garoppolo had played so well in leading a road upset of Arizona in the season opener and was even better in burying the Dolphins in the first half — including his second touchdown pass of the day when he held the safety on the left side of the field with his eyes, before whipping to the right to find tight end Martellus Bennett up the seam for a 20-yard score — that the sting of Brady’s suspension had at least been soothed by the prospect that the Patriots might go 4-0 without him and get a haul of draft picks if they ever decide to trade Garoppolo.
The Patriots probably don’t have time to get a lighthouse-sized poster of Garoppolo made this week, and we’re going to hear a lot about how smart Brissett is and how much time he has spent by Garoppolo’s side as just the two of them were entrusted with the first month of the season. But the Patriots have a short week before a meeting with J.J. Watt and the Houston Texans on Thursday night. And now the Pats face the prospect of having to bring in another quarterback to back up Brissett, because he is, for now, the only healthy one available. With Garoppolo, who finished 18 of 27 for 234 yards and three touchdowns, unlikely to suit up against Houston because of a sprained AC joint in his throwing shoulder, it seems nearly certain Brissett will have to start against the Texans and cheap nfl jerseys and possibly against the Bills in Week 4.
The Vikings continue to prove people — including this Game Picks idiot — wrong, winning with whoever suits up on game day. Sunday’s triumph at Carolina belonged to Everson Griffen, Marcus Sherels, Andrew Sendejo, Eric Kendricks, Kyle Rudolph and Jeff Locke (that’s the punter, folks). The defense sacked Cam Newton eight times, holding an offense that averaged over 31 points per game last year to 10. Kelvin Benjamin didn’t catch a ball. Read that line again.
What’s not to like about the Eagles right now? They whipped one of the (presumed) top teams in the league. They paid a king’s ransom for a rookie quarterback — a rookie quarterback who apparently didn’t impress one particular winless team (this decade, seemingly) — and he’s balling out. Most importantly, Jim Schwartz’s defense has allowed a grand total of 27 points in three games ( the lowest figure in the NFL by 10 points). The defensive line played out of sight Sunday night. Ah, the NFL.
“We are always looking for ways to improve our roster by acquiring talent and the trade deadline sometimes grants you that opportunity,” Browns executive Sashi Brown said. “Jamie Collins is a talented, tough, young playmaker that our coaches and personnel staff think can be a great fit for our defense. We feel really good about being able to add him to our team and look forward to getting him into our building and having him work with our coaches.”
Of course, the Browns run the risk of acquiring a talent that they do not know how to use properly. As is the case with many Patriots players shipped away, they never find the individual success they attained outside of the scheme. Current Cardinals pass rusher Chandler Jones and, for at least a little while, former Broncos receiver Wes Welker managed to buck the trend.
