The move was anticipated. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Saturday the Raiders would file their relocation paperwork within days. It is the first step in a relocation process that won’t become official until the Raiders receive 24 votes from NFL owners to formally make the move.
The Raiders had until Feb. 15 to file relocation papers. NFL owners could vote on the team’s relocation proposal at the Annual League Meeting in March, per Rapoport.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said “if the (Raiders) decide that they can’t make it work in Oakland and cheap jerseys and they decide that they want to file for relocation, then their window is from when they get eliminated from the playoffs to Feb. 15.” They will file before that window closes.
There are still questions, including whether or not the Raiders do the deal for the $1.9 billion Las Vegas Stadium project with the help of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson or not. That was the original plan — the Adelson family would contribute $650 million, the Raiders would contribute $500 million, and there would be $750 million in Clark County hotel room tax revenue. They have not yet come to terms.
Del Rio spent nine seasons as the Jaguars head coach, compiling a 68-71 record before he was fired in the middle of the 2011 season. After three seasons as the Broncos defensive coordinator, the Raiders gave him his second head-coaching opportunity by offering him a four-year deal before the 2015 season. He finished 7-9 in his first season with the team, an impressive achievement considering the Raiders had seven combined wins in the previous two seasons.
Once a turnstile for coaches, the Raiders now have the second-longest tenured head coach in the AFC West. If Del Rio makes it through the entire 2017-18 campaign, it will be the first time a Raiders head coach has survived three full seasons since Jon Gruden from 1998-2001.
Patterson will be an instant upgrade over promising young running back Jalen Richard, who handled a majority of Oakland’s kick and punt returns a year ago but will he find some field time next to Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper? Both were targeted more than 130 times by Derek Carr a year ago with the next highest wide receiver, Seth Roberts, seeing 77 passes.
There’s no doubt the prospect of Patterson being a jack of all trades within Oakland’s high-flying offense is enticing, but Minnesota tried just about everything over the past four seasons to make it work and failed.
Manuel will serve as depth in the quarterback room behind starter Derek Carr. While the Raiders also have second-year arm Connor Cook, adding Manuel all but guarantees Matt McGloin is headed out of Oakland for good.
Manuel was nothing short of a major disappointment for the Bills, who made the former Florida State star the 16th overall pick of the 2013 NFL Draft. In Oakland, he’s no guarantee to beat out Cook for the No. 2 role.
The plan includes a separate, baseball-only venue at the site for the Athletics, and alternate plans in case they choose to move. The two teams are the last remaining MLB and NFL teams to share a stadium.
The Raiders applied to move to the Los Angeles area last year, but the league turned down that request in favor of the Rams moving from St. Louis. The Chargers will join the Rams in the Los Angeles area this season and the teams will share a stadium in Inglewood, which is expected to open in 2019.
